Caring for the Hastings community since 1989
Hastings Home Hospice [HHH] provides support to residents of the Port Macquarie - Hastings local government area who are being cared for by the Palliative Care Service of the Mid North Coast Local Health District [MNCLHD].
HHH’s motto is 'helping to ease the hardship'.
Through fund raising and advocacy, HHH provides those with a life limiting illness assistance to maintain their quality of life, safety and independence. HHH helps meet the community needs by supplying vital medical resources that are otherwise inaccessible to many.
Many people living with a life-limiting illness choose to remain in their own home or a familiar environment, giving them a feeling of independence, privacy, close access to family, friends and what is important to them.
In fact, research from the Grattan Institute tells us that 70% of Australians, given the choice, would prefer to die at home.
HHH helps to achieve this by providing access to various supports to enable this to occur. Although not everyone will die at home, the palliative care teams and HHH aim to support patients at home, for as long as possible.
HHH maintains a collaborative relationship with the staff of MNCLHD, built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to compassionate care. Several committee members are also clinicians at the Wauchope Palliative Care Unit and the Port Macquarie–Hastings Community Palliative Care Team. Although volunteers do not work directly with patients, they stand firmly behind the clinicians who advocate for patient needs.
Together, this partnership blends decades of volunteer dedication with the clinical expertise and insight of healthcare professionals; ensuring that every effort is made to support palliative care patients with dignity, empathy, and the resources they deserve.
When cure is no longer an option, the focus of care changes to comfort, dignity and quality of life. The patient, their family and relevant others require additional support.
The aims of Hastings Home Hospice Inc (HHH) include:
providing equipment, medication to support the patient who chooses to stay in his/her own home, and
when hospitalisation for treatment or respite care is necessary, providing warm welcoming spaces where families can be together
disseminating information about palliative care services in our local area.
